Cost-effectiveness of naturopathic care for chronic low back pain.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the cost-effectiveness of naturopathic care (acupuncture, relaxation exercises, exercise and dietary advice, and a back care booklet) compared to standardized physiotherapy education and a back care booklet (control treatment) for low back pain in a sample (N = 70) of warehouse workers.DESIGN: Economic evaluation based upon the results of a pragmatic randomized controlled trial to determine the cost-effectiveness of naturopathic care to society as a whole, to the employer, and to participants.RESULTS: Naturopathic care (as compared to the control treatment) significantl

Cost effectiveness of natural health products: a systematic review of randomized clinical trials

Health care spending in North America is consuming an ever-increasing share of Gross Domestic Product (GDP). A large proportion of alternative health care is consumed in the form of natural health products (NHPs). The question of whether or not NHPs may provide a cost-effective choice in the treatment of disease is important for patients, physicians and policy makers. The objective of this study was to conduct a systematic review of the literature in order to find, appraise and summarize high-quality studies that explore the cost effectiveness of NHPs as compared to conventional medicine.

A naturopathic approach to the prevention of cardiovascular disease: cost-effectiveness analysis of a pragmatic multi-worksite randomized clinical trial

OBJECTIVE: To determine the cost-effectiveness of a worksite-based naturopathic (individualized lifestyle counseling and nutritional medicine) approach to primary prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD). METHODS: Economic evaluation alongside a pragmatic, multi-worksite, randomized controlled trial comparing enhanced usual care (EUC; usual care plus biometric screening) to the addition of a naturopathic approach to CVD prevention (NC+EUC).

Reducing Benefit Expenditures Through Evidence-based Expansion Of Care

Rising health care costs have been pushing increases in health benefit plans for some time. Evidence is now emerging that adding or enhancing adjunctive care services may serve to reduce overall costs. Over recent years there has been a significant increase in the quantity and quality of research related to complementary medicine. Numerous published studies have documented effective approaches for dealing with challenging conditions that members of benefit plans face. Much of the evidence relates to treating chronic conditions that can be major cost drivers within benefit plans, and includes c
