Course description

The Lab Testing Series is a new high-quality, evidence-informed webinar series designed to improve patient care by helping practitioners recognize clinical presentations, select appropriate tests, establish baselines, interpret lab tests, monitor treatment progress, explain test results, and further clinical hypotheses.

This foundational session focuses on core testing and specifically the application of liver and pancreas testing in clinical practice.

Learning objectives

  • Recognize the clinical presentations that leads to laboratory testing
  • Understand the value of lab testing to improve patient care and compliance
  • Review and discuss traditional and emerging biomarkers
  • Discuss the evidence base to support the use of specific laboratory tests
  • Classify lab tests by their ability to screen, diagnosis, or monitor the effectiveness of treatment or progression of disease

Kate Patterson is a naturopathic doctor in Portland Oregon with a decade’s experience specializing in the delivery of hematology, microbiology, rheumatology, and laboratory medical education at The National University of Natural Medicine, where she is an assistant professor. Using storytelling as a medium for developing empathy and retention of complex concepts, Kate weaves together history, social justice, public health, and patient-centred care into her curriculum. When not teaching or seeing patients at community clinics, Kate is commonly found in her kitchen, obsessing over creating delicious meals for her family and friends.
