Course description

The Lab Testing Series is a new high-quality, evidence-informed webinar series designed to improve patient care by helping practitioners recognize clinical presentations, select appropriate tests, establish baselines, interpret lab tests, monitor treatment progress, explain test results, and further clinical hypotheses.

This foundational session focuses on core testing and specifically the application of cardiovascular and lipid testing in clinical practice.

Learning objectives

  • Review basic pathophysiology of cardiovascular disease
  • Interpret the value of lab testing to improve patient care and compliance
  • Discuss the evidence base to support specific tests and their limitations
  • Review and discuss traditional, new, and emerging risk factors to prevent and treat CVD such as lipid testing, hsCRP, apoB, homocysteine, lippoprotein particle testing, oxidized LDL
  • Understand the advantages and disadvantages of using various risk calculatorsIdentify common presenting complaints related to the genitalia

Dr. Diamond Fernandes, B.Sc., ACSM CES, CSCS - Instructor

Dr. Diamond Fernandes, a cardiac physiologist, graduated from the University of Calgary with a degree of science in exercise and health physiology in 1997. He is a certified Clinical Exercise Physiologist through the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), certified through the American Anti-Aging Medicine & Metabolic Medical Institute, certified through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), member of the Canadian Association of Cardiac Rehabilitation (CACR), American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR), Canadian Society of Exercise Physiology (CSEP), and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.
