Course description

This course is designed to help students successfully prepare for CONO’s entry-to-practice clinical examinations. This live two-day course will be a practical review of the entry-level competency requirements for manipulation and physical examination/instrumentation, and will also be open to NDs seeking remediation or a practical review of these modalities. Our online Asian medicine theory and therapeutics NPLEX prep module (valued at $149) can also be bundled into the purchase of this course for a discounted price of $49.

Learning objectives

This course will review:
  • anatomy and motion palpation for cervical (Occ-C1, C1-Occ, C1-C2, C2-C7), thoracic (T1-T12) and lumbar (L1-L5) and sacroiliac joints (SI)
  • absolute and relative contraindications for manipulation
  • assessment, motion palpation and manipulation adjustment techniques, including appropriate set-up and line of drive
  • proper use of medical equipment and terminology while performing physical exams
  • physical examinations including vitals, cardiovascular, respiratory, abdominal, EENT and neurological as well as relevant diagnoses

Participants are asked to bring:
  • tuning fork
  • reflex hammer
  • thermometer
  • ophthalmoscope
  • otoscope
  • sphygmomanometer
  • stethoscope

A 5.5-hour online Asian Medicine NPLEX Prep Module taught by Dr. Neemez Kassam, ND covering Asian medicine theory and therapeutics can also be bundled into your purchase for a discounted price of $49 (regular $149).

It will review:
  • Asian medicine diagnosis including external patterns, internal patterns and pathologies
  • pulse and tongue diagnosis
  • acupuncture point locations including safety, indications and contraindications
  • clean needle technique
  • the uses, indications and contraindications for adjunct therapies including cupping, moxibustion and electro-acupuncture
INSTRUCTORS/SPEAKERS

Dr. Rita Patel, ND - Instructor

Dr. Rita Patel, ND, is a licensed naturopathic doctor, who has been teaching physical examinations for the past 15 years to students, through Physical and Clinical Diagnosis, Primary Care and IMG Clinical Skills Refresher at CCNM. In addition, she supervises patient care by fourth year interns at the Robert Schad Naturopathic Clinic (RSNC) and the Brampton Naturopathic Teaching Clinic (BNTC), where she is the lead supervisor. She also practices at Health Mantra in Mississauga and the Student Wellness Centre at McMaster University in Hamilton.

Dr. Sean McConnell, ND - Instructor

Sean McConnell graduated from Concordia University in Montreal with a degree in cultural anthropology before completing the four-year naturopathic program at the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine (CCNM), where he was awarded the Dr. Shimon Levytam prize for outstanding understanding of naturopathic medicine. Presently, Sean acts as a teaching assistant for Health Psychology and Naturopathic Manipulation, and works at Ancestral Voices Healing Center on the Six Nations of the Grand River Territory southwest of Hamilton.

Dr. Neemez Kassam, ND - Instructor

Dr. Neemez Kassam, ND, is a licensed naturopathic doctor and a registered acupuncturist. After graduating from the University of British Columbia with a B.Sc. he continued his academic career by attending Bastyr University in Seattle, Washington to earn a M.Sc. in acupuncture, as well as completing the first two years of naturopathic medicine. Upon completing the M.Sc., Dr. Kassam moved to Toronto where he completed the final two years of the naturopathic medical program at CCNM. Dr. Kassam is currently an associate professor and the department head in Asian medicine at CCNM, and has been teaching there since 2001. He has been the proud recipient of the "Excellence in Teaching Award" for the past six years.
