Registering with Accessibility Services

In accordance with the spirit and principles of the Ontario Human Rights Code (OHRC) and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, CCNM will use all reasonable efforts to accommodate students with disabilities in a manner designed to provide them with equal opportunities that are available to all students.

Disability is defined by subsection 10(1) of the Ontario Human Rights Code.

At the request of a student, reasonable accommodations will be provided with respect to the documented disability, permanent or temporary, that affects the student's ability to function in an academic setting. CCNM will endeavour to offer the most appropriate accommodation in a manner that does not compromise program,academic and technical standards, patient safety or standard of care and that respects the dignity of the student, meets individual needs, best promotes inclusion and maximizes confidentiality. A student with a disability must be able to demonstrate the required knowledge and perform the necessary skills of the curriculum independently.

Application for academic accommodation
To facilitate appropriate accommodation, students are asked to promptly register with Counselling and Accessibility Services and include documentation that substantiates their request. The documentation must come from a licensed practitioner who is qualified in the specific area of disability. The OHRC Guidelines (1994) notes that the College, as the body responsible for accommodating, must have sufficient information "to properly assess the impact of the disability on the specific academic task and know how to make the requested accommodation."

Accommodations provided by CCNM may or may not be acceptable to a given licensing board or examining body independent of the College. Students with disabilities are strongly advised to consult the naturopathic licensing board in the province or state in which they intend to be licensed.

Students interested in applying for academic or clinical accommodations are strongly encouraged to register with Accessibility Services as early as possible to avoid a delay in service. First year students should register as soon as they are accepted to the college; do not wait until September. The earlier one can register, the better Accessibility Services will be able to work with students to plan accommodations. In addition, at times the staff may require further information than is provided in the documentation. It is very important to allow adequate time for this process. The provision of accommodations begins after the accommodation request has been fully processed.

Documentation
Students requiring accommodations will need to provide documentation about their disability from a recognized health care professional. This documentation will be kept in confidence by Accessibility Services, and used solely to assess requests for accommodations. This information will be maintained separate from the student’s academic file.

How to Register
To register, students should ensure this form entitled "Medical Certificate" is completed by their health-care professional. Students should then schedule a meeting with the Student Counsellor, where a review of the documentation verifying the disability (or disabilities) is done, and eligible accommodations available in the naturopathic program may be discussed.

Once students have provided Accessibility Services with the appropriate documentation, eligible accommodation needs will be assessed by Accessibility Services which includes the Student Counsellors and the Associate Dean of Curriculum & Residency.

Once accommodations have been determined, students will receive a letter from Accessibility Services which will outline their approved accommodations. A copy of the letter will be provided to the Office of Academic Affairs. Most accommodations are directed to the instructors and the Associate Deans through the Office of Academic Affairs. However, there may be instances where students may need to provide a copy of the letter to his/her instructor(s). This provides students with the opportunity to introduce themselves and give instructors the necessary information about providing and implementing accommodations.
