Rocky Mountain Health Institute - Chinese herbology

A school offering courses on Chinese herbal medicine and environmental sciences. The most useful part of this website is probably its interesting and useful collection of articles on Chinese herbs, especially in reference to current research, availability, and legalities of using these herbs. Useful information found under the section for "Online References".

Southwest School of Botanical Medicine

Southwest School of Botanical Medicine, Arizona offers an intense 4 month clinical herbalist course. This site has a collection of beautiful photos, classic engravings, and pen-&-ink drawings of a large variety of medicinal plants. Also contains a page of links to other sites with medicinal plant images, organized alphabetically by plant name.

University of Arizona Herbarium

Features information on the plants and activities at the University of Arizona Herbarium. Their plant photograph collection, organized by family name, is quite interesting, but of varying quality.

University of Hawaii Vascular Plant Family Access Page

An extensive collection of plant photographs, with a brief description of each plant. Some of these photographs are wonderful.

University of Washington Medicinal Herb Garden

Contains some good photo images of the medicinal plants growing in the garden, listed alphabetically by Latin and common names. Also features a virtual walk through the garden.

University of Wisconsin - Department of Botany

A large collection of plant photographs, some of which are of questionable usefulness.

American Botanical Council

A non-profit organization dedicated to educating the public about beneficial herbs and plants, and promoting the safe and effective use of medicinal plants. Herbalgram is the official journal of the ABC. Contains mainly information about the organization and on-going projects, a catalogue of books available through them, and some links to sites related to botanical conferences and research projects.

Herb Research Foundation

The homepage for the Herb Research Foundation (HRF), a nonprofit research and educational organization focusing on herbs and medicinal plants. In conjunction with the American Botanical Council, HRF publishes HerbalGram and Herbs for Health. Features general information on the organizations, a forum to discuss issues concerning herbal medicine, and a search engine for links to other sites.

Herb Society (UK) Online

Features a collection of articles with general information on herbal medicine, information about the society, and includes a page of links to other sites, with a detailed description of each site.

Medical Herbalism Home Page

Home page for Medical Herbalism, a journal for clinical practitioners. Features reprints of current and past articles. A free quarterly electronic version of the journal is available through this site.

Queensland Herb Society

Not a lot of information on individual herbs per se, but has lots of recipes, teas, and interesting historical facts on local herbs.

The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew - The Herbarium

Features a list of the research on botanical medicine conducted at the Royal Botanic Gardens, with information on how to access it. Kew Gardens houses one of the largest collections of plants and plant information in the world.

The Society for Economic Botany

The Society for Economic Botany (SEB) was established to foster and encourage scientific research, education, and related activities on the past, present, and future uses of plants, and the relationship between plants and people. Features reports of SEB meetings, their newsletter, etc. A limited list of links is also available.

Species 2000

Species 2000 has the objective of enumerating all known species of plants, animals, fungi and microbes on Earth as the baseline dataset for studies of global biodiversity. Users worldwide can verify the scientific name, status and classification of any known species via the Species Locator on this homepage.

United Plant Savers

United Plant Savers (UpS) is a non-profit educational corporation dedicated to preserving native medical plants. Features information on endangered plants, proper wildcrafting methods, and names of other organizations with similar intent.

Classic Works in Herbal Medicine

Transcripts of classic texts on herbal medicine. Must have Acrobat Reader for graphics; if not, these are text-only.

Clinical Herb Manuals by Michael Moore

Transcripts of useful charts and manuals, including a herbal materia medica, herbal repertory, herbal-medical contraindications, and intake forms and worksheets. Some files are only accessible through Adobe Reader. Michael Moore is the Director of the Southwest School of Botanical Medicine.

Elchai's Herbal Remedies and Lore

A very nice website, with information on different herbs, mythical and spiritual aspects of herbs, herbal formulas, and so on.

Environmental Estrogens and Other Hormones Webpage - Phytoestrogens

Useful, well-referenced information on phytoestrogens.

Henriette's Herbal Homepage

A personal homepage that has some links to other webpages, botanical facts collected from the Internet, recipes and includes a forum for questions about medicinal herbs. Limited internet versions of some herbal software also available. Some very useful information can be found here. Includes an internal search engine. This site provides valuable fulltext access to a number of classic herb texts.

The Herbal Encyclopedia

Features basic medicinal and magical/spiritual information on specific plants. Also has articles on growing, harvesting and storing herbs, some herbal combinations, etc. Created with Pagan/Wiccan/Native needs in mind, but is useful for everyone interested in the properties and uses of the various healing herbs.

Herbal Hall

Features an on-line herbal library, with an internal search engine. Also contains profiles on individual herbs, and links to other botanical sites.

HerbNET

Lots of information on all things herbal. Links to other herb-related sites, an online newsletter, a calendar of events, information on herb books, etc.

Herbs for Health

A small but frequently up-dated collection of articles pertaining to medicinal herbs. Also has a page of links, divided into categories such as Herbs and Cancer, Chinese Herbalism, Ayurvedic Herbalism, and general herb sites. Has an internal search engine.

Howie Brounstein's Homepage

Features articles on wildcrafting, endangered plants, and good information on a variety of herbs and herb-related topics. Lots of links to other pages as well.

This is probably one of the best commercial sites available for Chinese herbs. Each product description includes a description of each herb and its medicinal use. Allows searches for products by symptoms and classical patent name.

Herbal Information Center

Contains some general information on a selection of popular herbs.

The Natural Pharmacist

A well organized site of botanical information. Information is accessible by condition; herb or supplement. Includes information on drug interactions and very detailed condition information.

Richters Herbs Herb Info Sheets

Useful features on this commercial site include charts on basic properties and growing instructions for a variety of common herbs. Access to Mark Tierney's Medicinal Herb Database, which contains an internal search engine, searchable by common name, properties/ uses, and bodily system affected, is also provided.

Alternative Nature Herbal Link Page

A growing collection of herb information and links. Features a collection of articles on a variety of herbal subjects, a wildflower and herb photo gallery, a list of recommended books, and a page of useful herbal links with an internal search engine.

American Indian Ethnobotany Database

A searchable database of journals, books, and papers related to the plant medicines, foods, drugs, and dyes of Native North American Peoples. Gives the medicinal and household use of the plant as well as which tribes use it. A useful resource.

Botanical Dermatology Database

Very basic information on plants related to dermatology, either as a treatment of certain conditions, or that cause dermatological pathologies. Classified by plant name, plant products, and dermatological indexes. Still under construction.

Dr. Duke's Phytochemical and Ethnobotanical Databases

Allows searches for phytochemical content and activity, and ethnobotanical uses of all the plants listed in the US National Agricultural Library. Very useful and easy to use.

Herbal-Shaman Home Page

A regularly updated archive of information on almost 300 species of ethnobotanicals, with an emphasis on the medicinal and visionary herbs, cactus and fungi.

The Magic Garden

Basically, a page of links to other botanical-related sites, divided into different categories.

NAPRALERT

NAPRALERT (NAtural PRoducts ALERT) contains bibliographic and factual data on natural products, including information on the pharmacology, biological activity, and chemistry of plant, microbial, and animal (including marine) extracts. Theoretically, a great resource, but very confusing to use!

Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database

This database provides up to date clinical data on natural medicines, herbal medicines and dietary supplements. The data included for each entry is referenced to peer-reviewed medical literature, The database includes product names, brand names, scientific names and common names. Access to this database is available from CCNM computers - simply click on the "Click to Login" button.

PLANTS Project

Sponsored by the United States Department of Agriculture, this site provides access to several databases, including the National PLANTS Database project (providing standardized information on plant names, symbols, and other attributes), the National Plant Data Center (features large collection of plant images) and the Integrated Taxonomy Information System (online, scientifically-verifiable list of biological names of North American flora and fauna).

Rainforest Plants

Features information on a large variety of rainforest/tropical medicinal plants, including common names, medicinal uses, ethnobotanical uses, pharmacology, and pictures. Contains a collection of articles on rainforest plants, and other interesting and useful information.

Soil and Health Library

A free online public library about alternative agriculture, holistic health, self-sufficient living, and personal and spiritual development. Features transcripts of older, out-of-print books on these subjects.

Floral Radiographs

Not really a botanical site per se, but this site has some gorgeous black-and-white radiographic images of flowers that are worth checking out for interest's sake.

Floridata

An on-line photo reference of plants, covering categories such as trees, shrubs, vines, cactus, water plants, annuals and many more. Each photo is accompanied by a brief description of the plant, its habitat, growing conditions, etc..., but no real medicinal information.

Flowerbase

Searchable database of pictures of flowers, with not much additional information.

Köhler's Medizinal Pflanzen

Contains over 300 beautiful colour images of medicinal plants, taken from Hermann A. Köhler's book, Medizinal Pflanzen, published in 1887. Searchable by botanical name.

Smithsonian Catalog of Botanical Illustrations

Images from the Smithsonian's botanical illustration database, which contains over 3000 plant images. The on-line version contains about 500 illustrations, but all the illustrations will eventually be digitalized. The only drawback is that plants can only be located by selecting a plant family and then a generic name from the index.
