Learning Resources Centre
The Learning Resource Centre (LRC) provides a collection of books, journals, databases and multimedia to support the objectives of the academic, clinic and research programs of the College.
The collection
The collection spans topics in the basic sciences, botanical medicine, community health, homeopathic medicine, nutritional sciences, health psychology, Asian medicine, physical medicine, naturopathic history and practice, and the clinical sciences. The size of the collection includes approximately 9,000 books, 100 journals in print format, and approximately 400 journals via electronic subscriptions. The LRC subscribes to numerous bibliographic databases, including Alt Health Watch, AMED, MD Consult, First Consult, Natural Comprehensive Database, American Botanical Database, and the Cochrane Review. Electronic links to useful Web sites are supplied via the LRC homepage (www.ccnm.edu/lrc), which includes an annotated description for each link. A growing collection of multimedia resources includes CD-ROMs, audio and videotapes. This collection includes interactive material and a collection of electronic textbooks relevant to the curriculum.
Services and facilities
The LRC extends full library privileges to current CCNM students, faculty, clinic and administrative staff. Alumni Association members enjoy access to selected collections and databases.
Dry lab
Resources include a new practical dry lab, equipped with anatomically correct models, skeletons, bones, diagnostic x-rays, acupuncture models and diagrams. Many of the models are interactive, and can be disassembled and examined in detail. Some of the models are also designed to help students learn to locate glands, detect breast lumps or practice venipuncture.
Wireless network/Multimedia
The installation of a wireless network on campus as well as a proxy server makes it possible to access selected electronic resources from home or from selected zones on the campus.
Equipment such as video and audio cassette players are provided for use of the multimedia collection. In addition a virtual server houses a selection of CD title that can be viewed on any desk computer on the campus. A lab in the library provides access to computer workstations and printers. Two card-operated photocopiers are also available.
Qualified staff assist with general reference questions and basic literature searches. Tutorials on the use of the electronic databases and the computerized catalogue are provided at various times in the year.
