Adjunctive Cancer Care Clinic
What to expect
On your first visit, you will meet with a fourth-year intern, who will take a detailed history. Together, you will establish goals for your treatment. Your intern and the supervising naturopathic doctor will develop a plan for naturopathic adjunctive cancer treatment.
Naturopathic doctors use natural, non-toxic therapies that support the whole person and stimulate inherent healing processes. The goal is to create a healthy internal and external environment. This is significant for individuals living with cancer.
What types of therapies might I receive?
- Clinical nutrition – using diet and nutritional supplements to complement traditional cancer treatment options, to ensure that you have adequate energy and nutrition to help your body heal.
- Intravenous (IV) therapy – administering liquid substances, such as Vitamin C and other vitamins and minerals, directly into the vein. Intravenous therapy is one of the fastest means of delivering substances through the body.
- Botanical (herbal) medicine – using plant substances to address a variety of health concerns. In general, botanicals work synergistically with the body's own chemistry, working gently and effectively with few side effects.
- Homeopathic medicine – based on the principle of "like cures like", homeopathic medicine works in a subtle yet powerful way to stimulate healing and complement other cancer therapies.
- Asian medicine – acupuncture and Asian herbs unify and harmonize imbalances, stimulating the immune system and healing response.
- Psychological medicine – mental attitudes and emotional states often influence physical illness. Stress management techniques and individual counseling is an integral component of healing.
Naturopathic medicine in cancer care
Historically, conventional cancer treatment has been based on the "tumour-oriented model", which seeks to cure cancer through treatments focused directly on attacking the tumour, e.g., surgery, chemotherapy and radiation.
Complementary cancer care at the RSNC takes a holistic, or whole-person, approach to cancer care by using scientifically grounded, natural methods to strengthen the body's ability to heal itself.
The goals of naturopathic medicine for people undergoing cancer treatment include:
- decreasing side effects of cancer treatment
- improving energy, well being and overall quality of health
- balancing the body's immune system
- supporting the mind, body, and spirit in the healing process
- providing strategies for cancer prevention and health maintenance
The RSNC complementary cancer therapy shift
This ground-breaking shift was established in 2007, to provide complementary cancer care for the growing number of cancer patients pursuing alternatives or additions to current standard medical care. RNSC provides evidence-based care, standardized intakes and cancer-specific therapies in an academic environment.
